What Is Liraglutide?
Liraglutide is a clear and colorless solution that is available as a subcutaneous injection. After more than 10 years of research and development, liraglutide has a variety of effects, including promoting pancreatic islet cell regeneration, lowering blood sugar, weight loss, and protecting the cardiovascular system. Its brand names, Saxenda and Victoza, is primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes; Whereas, the brand name Saxenda, is dedicated to the treatment of chronic obesity and is often used as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Liraglutide is an acylated human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that shares 97% amino acid sequence similarity to human endogenous GLP-1 (7-37), retains all the biological activity of GLP-1, and has the agonistic effect of GLP-1 receptor. It is expressed by recombinant DNA in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and its molecular structure differs from native GLP-1 by only one amino acid. Specifically, two structural modifications were made: the substitution of lysine at position 34 with arginine, and the addition of a glutamate-mediated 16-carbon palmitoyl fatty acid side chain to lysine at position 26.
Drug-drug interactions
Liraglutide can cause a prolonged gastric emptying time, which may affect the absorption of oral medications taken at the same time. In clinical pharmacology trials, liraglutide had no effect on the absorption of the oral drug tested. However, there is still concern for the potential consequences of delayed absorption of oral medications co-used with liraglutide.
